Over 50 volunteers in the region assist 30 organizations that directly serve people who are poor or that address issues related to poverty.
Many of the programs in the Washington D.C./Northern Virginia Region revolve around the concept of home
Shelters for the homeless:
-The Lamb Center
-The McKenna Center
Group homes for developmentally disabled adults:
-L'Arche of Greater Washington and Northern Virginia
-Bethlehem House
Transitional homes
for victims of abuse:
-Bethany House
Transitional homes for ex-offenders and recovering addicts:
-DC Central Kitchen
-New Endeavors by Women
-Arlington-Alexandria Coalition for the Homeless.

Many volunteers in the region minister to the needs of refugees and immigrants regarding documentation, education, citizenship and other needs, for example, Hogar Hispano, Refugee Services, and the Spanish Catholic Center.

Ignatian Volunteers help with issues of food, clothing, and life skills (for example, parenting, budgeting). They also work in education and training for entry or re-entry into the world of work (Living Wages and DC Central Kitchen)
