three volunteers stepped forward to help launch the program. Those volunteers served at Loyola High School, the Pregnancy Help Center, and Verbum Dei High School.
Oh, how we’ve grown! In 2007-08, nine Ignatian Volunteers will serve the Los Angeles community, providing 5,760 hours of community service. Ignatian Volunteers are working in refugee & migration services, substance abuse recovery programs, community & parish outreach, and vocational education & job placement programs. They serve the homeless, act as mentors to young parents, tutor teens & adults, and offer administrative & fundraising support.
According to the 2005 American Community Survey (U.S. Census Bureau), 18% of the population in the city of Los Angeles lives below the poverty level, compared to 13% state-wide. While community agencies throughout Los Angeles do a remarkable job working to meet the needs of people who are materially poor, most will say that there are simply not enough resources to meet the needs. Agencies increasingly look to volunteers to help fulfill their missions to people who are poor. Ignatian Volunteers, all age 50 or better, bring a lifetime of experience to their volunteers work and they are committed and spiritually supported to serve.
