Linda Hayek, Ignatian Volunteer
I volunteer at St. Peter Claver Cristo Rey High School and it is a perfect match for me as a retired mathematics teacher! One of my projects is to develop math curriculum with two young teachers. I feel gratified watching them grow and I find myself with renewed energy in the process. Being an Ignatian Volunteer, however, calls me to go beyond the warm fuzzy feelings that come with doing good deeds. The structure of IVC adds a layer of prayer and reflection that makes the experience deeper and richer.
Last week I was invited to teach and the math teacher introduced me to the class. I was struck by one phrase in particular: “Do you know who she is? She’s not just some random person…” Her words reminded me that I AM unique, the one and only being like this that God created …and is still creating! Being an Ignatian Volunteer has helped me to see the world (and myself!) with new eyes, and continues to remind me of God’s invitation to “Come and See.”
